Manageable Life - the story and song

Enjoy the story and song of 'Manageable Life', written in 1998 and performed last week as a re-dedication of a very special place in Boulder Creek.

Thanks to old pal Al Lundell for capturing this.

You may also enjoy this audio-only rendition, performed with Nick Peters back when I wrote it.

Klezmer in Killington

Last month, I visited New England for Ben Vigoda's Olde Tyme Bachelor Party Jam Band. It was a blast! Here's Jon Feldman, Jordi Kleiner, and Bret Bjurstrom playing a tune of Jon's called "The Inception".

In the middle of the take, we cut to Ben and company making musical instruments for his wedding.

How to Climb a Tree

Certified arborist Martin Arnest took my headcam into our 50-year old, 5-story tree, after two days of cutting and trimming, and showed us how it's done.

Unfortunately, the sound didn't turn out as great as I'd hoped, so we miss many of Martin's observations, but if you listen close you can hear him whistling. See the photo stills.

Surfing with the Headcam

For the past two days, I've filmed Ben and myself surfing with the new waterproof headcam from Oregon Scientific.

Oh, it is on.

Surfing Ocean Beach

That's me dropping in. Filmed by Chad and the gang that I met out there on the most perfect day of the season, Saturday Dec 2 @ Sloat (full video).

This was on my favorite right, just south of the showers. Freeze-frames here.

Cancer! Episode Four: Powers

The funniest guy I've ever known, and a long time band-mate, Morgan Phillips was recently diagnosed with a treatable form of cancer.

In true Morgan fashion, he's video-blogging his experience over at YouTube. Seriously gripping stuff.

In this episode, Morgan uses the power of meditation and iMovie special effects to treat himself (and us).

How to Play Death Cab

The other day, I heard I'll Follow You Into the Dark by Death Cab for Cutie on the radio. I said, "Oh well, sounds like I'll have to learn that one, too."

Then, I found it on Odeo and listened to it a bunch of times. I thought about the chord pattern and how familiar it sounded, and then the whole structure of the song just popped into my head!

So here is a video of the first and last verses, guitar only.

You know, for practice.

In case you wanted to learn it.

Happy 30th Mer!

Everyone came over for Mer's 30th Birthday party last night. We played "Let's Make a Deal" in which there were pinatas instead of doors from which to choose.

The last of three pinatas was in the shape of the infamous Zinedine Zidane. After Jeff eggs her on, Mer takes a few vicious swings and does away with the frenchman, dispite Jason's best marionette manipulation.

Go Mer!

[Update] Check out Aaron's excellent photos of the occasion.

FlickrTube

YouTube surprises me. In a good way. It's very Flickry. In fact, here's a video of photos taken entirely from Flickr, with a Creative Commons license:

Here's the Odeo.

Ciao, Macromedia

Dear Friends,

Starting next Thursday, I will be joining a podcasting company called Odeo as their QA guy. (More on this later.) Although I am really excited about this change, it is not easy to say goodbye. So, I set some original music to this brief video chronicle of my journey from Redwood Shores, my time with the Web Team, at 606 Townsend, and up until now:

I have learned an incredible amount from the Dreamweaver team in the past 2 1/2 years, and met some lifelong friends. I am really proud of Studio 8, and it has been an honor to work with everyone, including all you customers!

Let's keep in touch,

-Dom

While My Head Gently Explodes

While My Guitar Gently Weeps My friend Dave sent me a video of this guy (Jake Shimabukuro) playing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" on a ukelele in Central Park.

Take a sec and check this out - he rips it up!

Makes me want to pick one up and try myself.

Wedding A Cappella

Last weekend, we visited New York for Jove & Donna's Wedding. It was the first time that all eight of my graduating a cappella group (Sixteen Feet) have been together in eight years! It was a beautiful ceremony - I got to be a part of it - as Jove sang to his bride, and folks participated in a combined Quaker / Jewish tradition. Check out the pictures here.

At the reception, we warmed up a little bit with some of the party favors (video clips by Mer):

After folks had a chance to dine and relax, I gave my toast. "The first time I met Jove..."

The boys were doing the intro to "Naturally" in the background, and after I told the story of meeting Donna, we broke into a full rendition of the song:

Then Jove joined us for a Special Donna Version of "Come Go with Me":

Later in the evening, after the reception, seven of us gathered for some more seranades (Ken had retired to be with baby Dora). Here is some of "Duke of Dubuque" featuring yours truly:

and a bit of the ending:

After which, we pulled together the classic "Every Time I Turn Around":

and some "Kiss the Girl":

Followed by a 'high risk, high reward' version of "Cantina Band", the bar music from Star Wars:

Somehow, it all came flooding back to us, and it was just as fun as when we were in college. Must have been the four years of singing together 3 times a week, all that time on stage, opening for Dave Matthews, recording two CDs, traveling to Italy, reunion concerts, and - oh yeah - our wedding, Ken's wedding, and Jon's wedding!

Thanks Jove and Donna, for bringing us back together for the weekend. We really should do this more often.

Big Mountain Video

For being good boys and girls this year, Macromedia gave us each these keen Marmot jackets. Ever the QA engineer, I decided to test mine right out!

Captured on my Nokia 3650 and our Canon Powershot S30: scenes from Big Mountain in Whitefish, Montana.
